A brief history about the cable wakeboard lake...
So, Want to learn to wakeboard but no boat huh? Then off to the cable wakeboard lake it is for you!
The Cable system (rixen system) was invented in Germany in the early 1960's by a man called Bruno Rixen, and is a great alternative to wakeboarding behind a boat. Probably the biggest benefit being "You don't need a boat".... While its very hard to argue that spending a day out on your own boat is a fantastic day, for the vast majority of us, its just not a realistic option. Boats, especially specifically designed wakeboard boats can be very expensive to buy, and just as expensive to fuel and maintain. This make's the cable wakeboard lake a great and affordable alternative.
Not only is a day at the cable wakeboard lake significantly cheaper than buying you own boat, it's alot less difficult than begging your friend to let you use their's for the day, and there are loads of other benefits too.....
First off, lets cover what a cable wakeboard lake is.....
Well, first of all, you need a lake... D'uh... wether its man made or natural it
doesn't matter. It needs to be about 800m-1100m in circumference, and rectangular works best. Two parallel cable cables are run, about 25ft in the air, overhanging the edge of the lake. Approximately every 80m or so a "carrier" is attached to this line and this is what the riders hook onto. They're designed in such a way that the riders ropes can be attached and detached at the same time without slowing the system down. This leads to great efficiency and allows 10-12 riders to ride at the same time.
Instead of every rider fighting for a turn behind the boat and maybe getting 10-15mins at a time, this makes it instantly possible for everybody to ride for as long as they like......(or can hold on for) Also with the Pull Point (the point the rope is attached to the cable) being 25ish feet up in the air, it actually makes it much easier to learn from the very beginning. This is because, as i'm sure you can fully appreciate, you want to ride ontop of the water not in it. With the pull point being so high in the air the rope is helping to pull you "up" and not "forward" like learning behind a boat!

Well, the most noticeable one will be, there no's wake! The next most noticeable one will be the addition of "Kickers" and "Sliders." These are introduced to overcome the lack of wake. Similar to what you would expect to see at a skate park, there will be a selection of Ramps (kickers) and Grind Rails (sliders). Once you master riding Regular (most comfortable foot forward) and Switch (opposite foot forward) and progress past your basic surface tricks, *Ollie, Butter slide, Ollie 180, surface 360* you can progress onto the seriously fun stuff. All manner of tricks and grinds can be performed at the cable lake..... To see some of these please visit the "Cable Wakeboard Tricks" section
One last thing to note about the "Cable Wakeboard Lake!"

It's fun for the whole family! At most Cable Wakeboard Lakes you will find a variety of equipment, inc, Water Ski's, Mono Ski's, Wakeboards, Knee Boards, and Wake Skates.... Even the most novice rider can master the "Knee Board" in a matter of minutes, and once you see a 5yr old kid smashing some huge air off a kicker, you will know anyone with a bit of practice can be a pro, and everyone can have fun...And for the parents out there... If learning your next "extreme sport" isn't on the agenda, most cable wakeboard lakes now-a-days have great restaurant facilities where you can chill out and enjoy a day out watching your kids become the next big thing in wakeboarding!
